2020 Taipei Film Academy International Animation and VFX Forum - Taipei Film Commission

I. Event Description
Taipei Film Academy International Animation and VFX Forum will be held on 12th September 2020. The speakers include Academy Awards winner Erik-Jan de Boer, a well-recognized animation director for his stunning work in Life of Pi and Taiwanese VFX supervisor Tomi Kuo, whose work Detention has won Golden Horse Awards and Taipei Film Awards for Best Visual Effects. They will be sharing their valuable experience and analyzing character design and animation details from their works, revealing the integration of CG objects into live action scenes.

A. Tomi Kuo
Tomi Kuo is the VFX Supervisor and the Co-founder in Golden Horse winning-award studio Renovatio Pictures. With his successful career in the film industry for several years, he believes "VFX is not only creating gorgeous visual but also to tell the story better", therefore he is committed to use VFX for narrative enhancement. His extensive film credits include various VFX-driven projects, such as Detention, The Victim's Game, 10,000 MILES, KANO, LOVE, Roof Top.
B. Erik-Jan de Boer
Erik-Jan de Boer is a freelance VFX supervisor / Animation Director and has been in the entertainment industry for over 30 years. His work includes animation and VFX for commercials, theme park rides and feature films.
He started his career at the Moving Picture Company in London in early 1989. In 1993 he became Head of 3D Animation and SFX at Rushes Plc. There he was responsible for the artistic and commercial success of numerous high-profile productions for clients such as Ford, the BBC, Reebok, Phillips and the US Marine Corps.
In 1996 he joined Rhythm & Hues in Los Angeles where his credits include Academy Award VFX winner The Golden Compass, Academy Award VFX nominee The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Night at the Museum, The A-Team, Cats & Dogs, Stuart Little and Babe : Pig in the City. In 2012 he directed the character animation for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi for which he received an Academy Award for best VFX.
From 2013 to 2018 Erik worked at Deluxe's Method Studios on, among others, The Maze Runner, Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron and Bong Joon-Ho's Okja, a Netflix production which was a Palme d'Or nominee at Cannes and included in the 2018 AMPAS VFX branch bake-off.
Erik-Jan was born in Amsterdam and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Image and Media Technology from the Arts Academy of Utrecht and a Master’s Degree in Image Synthesis and Computer Animation from Middlesex University, England.
V. Course Schedule (Tentative)
Developing Visual Effects for Detention and
The Victims' Game
Tomi will be sharing his experience in developing visual effects for Films and TV series. Taking Detention and The Victims' Game as examples, he will analyze the difference between these two genres in terms of post-production. Moreover, he will also demonstrate how to create the perfect VFX shot from the perspective of both the director and your team.
Erik-Jan de Boer
Using examples from Life of Pi, Maze Runner and Okja Erik will talk about developing photorealistic CG assets for feature projects and how to integrate them successfully into the live action scene. This will be a broad talk touching on muscle and skin simulation, capturing the right practical physicality and designing cameras and lighting for objects that are not on set!
The One at Taipei 101. More information will be communicated to selected participants.

A. The event will be adjusted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, safety measures will be conducted on-site, and to update in accordance with regulations of the Central Epidemic Command Center.
B. Applicants have the obligation to make sure all submitted information are true and accurate. Taipei Film Commission disqualifies an applicant’s participation in any future of its events and announces all dishonest applications on its official website.
C. A valid proof of identity is required for selected participants on-site. Taipei Film Commission reserves the right to disqualify a participant if the participant fails to prove his/her identity.
D. In the event work and classes are announced suspended by the Taipei City Government due to force majeure such as natural disasters, acts of terrorism; labor disputes or stoppages; war; government acts or orders; epidemics; pandemics or outbreak of communicable disease; the courses of the day will be canceled without notice.
E. In the event that changes are made to the Forum, the official website of Taipei Film Commission prevails other sources of information. Taipei Film Commission reserves the right to make changes to and interpret this notice of enrollment and the selection criteria to apply.
F. If controversies over the application or interpretation of this enrollment should occur, the situation shall be settled according to legal regulations of Republic of China (Taiwan). The applicant agrees that any litigation arising from this Forum shall be subjected to the jurisdiction of Taipei District Court in the first instance.
G. By submitting an application to the Forum, the applicant understands and accepts the guidelines of this enrollment, and agrees that Taipei Film Commission gathers and processes his/her personal information according to law.
H. Photo-taking, video-taping and sound-recording are not allowed in the Forum.
