Taiwan Cinema Party at 2012 Cannes International Film Festival has set its own records, with the number of guests, film directors and media attending the event reaching the highest this year.
About 600 guests waited in line to attend Taiwan Cinema Party, the number is the highest ever recorded.
2012 Cannes International Film Festival Taiwan Cinema Party took place at The Carlton Hotel in Cannes, France. The total number of attendees reached 600, the largest that has ever been observed. Attendees included Ripples of Desire director Zero Chou, GF& BF director Yang Ya-che and actor Joseph Chang, Double Trouble director David Chang, actor Chen Han-tien, Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard opening film, Mystery, director Lou Ye and leading actress Hao Lei.

Several Taiwanese production have been selected into Cannes this year, including Tsai Ming-liang’s Walker as International Critics’ Week closing film, Taiwan-Germany co-production GSAP selected for Short Films competition, Midi Zhao’s Lian Qing, A Burmese Girl selected for The Fabrique Des Cinemas du mode, Mr. Monster, Secret and The Lighthouse selected for Short Films.

The reception began with amazing glove puppetry performance by host Mr. Michel Lu. The performance was followed by an announcement by Paris Film Festival director and Taipei Film Commission director jointly announcing that three film proposals from Taiwan were officially selected for the Paris Project of Paris Film Festival; selection included Chung Mong-hong’s Soul, Tom Shu-yu Lin’s No More Shall We Part, and Shen Ko-shang’s Songs of Siren.
The announcement was followed by director Midi Zhao and producer Patrick Mao Huang whose film, Lian Qing, A Burmese Girl, was selected for competition for Cannes Film Festival The Fabrique Des Cinemas du mode, Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight chair also greeted Midi Zhao and Patrick Mao Huang. Double Trouble director David Chang and actor Chen Han-tien greeted everyone on stage. GF & BF director Yang Ya-che and actor Joseph Chang attended the reception, director Yang noted that Joseph Chang was in his training for the film theme song and he hoped to finish the song to impress the audiences. Ripples of Desire actor Joseph Chang and actress Michelle Chen received the most international and local attention. The film’s official trailer also made its debut at the party.
The most famous action star, Jackie Chan and other local and international celebrities joined the reception.
The biggest surprise for the night was definitely the one single celebrity’s attendance: the most famous action star, Jackie Chan. International press followed Jackie Chan the entire night. Jackie Chan announced that he would never retire and as long as he attends the film festival, he will also attend Taiwan Cinema Party. He also showed his interest in performing for Giddens Ko’s next film, the “male version” of You Are The Apple of My Eye.

About 20 international press attended the reception, including SCREEN, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Film Business Asia, RAI,SARFT, Hong Kong iCable Entertainment, TVB, Hong Kong Apple Daily, Sina and Youku.

The booming of Taiwan Cinema for the past few years was signaled by its record-breaking blockbusters, which has attracted international attention. This year, a total of twenty Taiwanese film companies joined Cannes International Film Festival film Market. Besides interested international buyers and film festival organizers who inquired about purchasing and festival screening, international producers also expressed their interest of producing films in Taiwan.
Taipei Film Commission has organized The Film Market and Taiwan Cinema Party four years in a row. The success of Taiwan Cinema Party has made a name on the international stage, filmmakers consider Taiwan Cinema Party the “it” event of the year and compete to get the invitation to work with Taiwan filmmakers.
