With the government grant from the Ministry of Culture, R.O.C., and the support from the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government and Taipei Film Commission, Netflix’s first collaboration with a Taiwanese filmmaker, Nelson Yeh’s A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities (working title), will soon start filming. The 20-episode series, mainly set in Taipei and San Francisco, is expected to be streaming to over 100 million members across 190 countries when it’s launched on Netflix.
As Netflix grows internationally, the world’s leading entertainment service, has been continuously investing in content from around the world. Apart from its successful collaboration with content creators from some 15 countries including Canada, Brazil, Mexico, France and Germany, Netflix has also started to work with Asian creators including original shows Japan such as Midnight Diner and Samurai Gourmet; and the highly-anticipated original TV series Kingdom and Love Alarm from South Korea.
After launching its video-on-demand streaming service in over 190 countries including Taiwan last year, Netflix is now working with Kbro Media and Good Image production- a team led by Taiwanese filmmaker Nelson Yeh- to create A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities(working title): a 20-episode series featuring cross-cultural differences and similarities between modern day Taipei and the tight-knit Taiwanese-American community in San Francisco.
Director Nelson Yeh
This Netflix original made in Taiwan will be produced by Nelson Yeh, who came to prominence in 2001 with his directorial debut Night Market Hero, an inspiring comedy drama that won the Best Feature Film in Guam International Film Festival. His second feature film Twa-Tiu-Tiann, a time-travelling costume drama set against the backdrop of Taiwan under Japanese rule, also topped the box office in 2014. His third film Mad King of Taipei (2016) received rave reviews at the Busan International Film Festival. Many of the TV series directed/produced by Nelson Yeh featuring local Taiwanese culture including Flavour of Life (2013, Yilan), Way Back into Love (2012, Hualien), Far and Away (2017)…etc have received major Taiwanese Golden Bell nominations and awards over the years. Last year Yeh was nominated Best Director by Asian Television Awards for La Grande Chaumiere Violette.
A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities starts with two 29-year-old girls( a Taiwanese TCM practitioner in Taipei and a Taiwanese-American programmer in San Francisco) swapping homes for a few weeks and follows their respective cultural odyssey in each of the two cities. To portray the exuberant Taiwanese-American community in San Francisco, the film crew will be working in the states for a whole month, which would be an unprecedented effort by Taiwanese filmmakers.
“Not because it’s going to be a Netflix Original made in Taiwan, but because it’s the first time a Taiwanese story with a global perspective and a universal appeal will be streaming online in over 30 languages and 190 countries.”, said director Nelson Yeh, who went on to explain: “Being able to work with Netflix is more than just a business collaboration. It’s a wonderful opportunity for Taiwan to be more visible on the world stage.”
Said John Derderian, Director of International Originals at Netflix, “We are excited about bringing the global and multi-cultural worlds of Taiwan and America to our members around the world. A Taiwanese Tale of Two Cities will be proudly streaming to over 100 million members across 190 countries when it’s launched on Netflix.”
