On the occasion of FILMART 2017, the Taipei Film Commission (TFC) held an international press conference this afternoon (13th) at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong to announce the “2017 Paris Coproduction Village-Focus on Taiwan” project and to welcome the “2017 Taipei Summer Universiade” taking place in Taipei, Taiwan this summer. During the press conference, a Partnership Agreement was signed by Mr. Chung Yung-feng, CEO of Taipei Culture Foundation and Mr. Pierre-Emmanuel Fleurantin, CEO of Paris Coproduction Village. The Signing Ceremony was followed by an introduction about recent “Taiwan Sports Cinema,” for which occasion renowned Taiwanese sports film actor Easton Dong (Island Etude, 2006) and actress Megan Lai (10,000 Miles, 2016) both flew to Hong Kong to meet the press as event ambassadors.
The press conference opened with remarks by Mr. Chung Yung-feng, CEO of Taipei Culture Foundation and Mr. Pierre-Emmanuel Fleurantin, CEO of Paris Coproduction Village. CEO Chung was excited to present the “2017 Paris Coproduction Village-Focus on Taiwan,” a breakthrough in the relationship of the two cities since TFC first signed an agreement on film industry collaboration with Ile de France Film Commission back in 2010. Since Paris has the second most frequent cultural exchanges with Taipei, next to Hong Kong, Chung believes the newly announced project will further strengthen the ties among the two cities.
CEO Fleurantin also stressed on Taiwan’s important role in cinema for French and European film lovers, revealing he himself grew up watching works by great Taiwanese authors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang. As Taiwan will become the first Asian partner country of Paris Coproduction Village, Fleurantin looked forward to discovering a new generation of Taiwanese directors, and hopes to bring about more co-productions.
The two then signed a Partnership Agreement to announce the launch of “2017 Paris Coproduction Village-Focus on Taiwan.”

Organized within the Industry Week of Champs-Elysées Film Festival, the “Paris Coproduction Village” serves as a development and financing platform for carefully selected worldwide feature projects, intended for French or European coproduction. The 2017 edition, running from June 20th to June 22nd, will focus on Taiwanese film industry. Taiwan and France will select 12 projects, including 3 Taiwanese ones, and offer these filmmakers the chance to meet with international producers, financiers, buyers, etc. A delegation of Taiwanese film professionals will be invited to the event; in addition, there will be a conference on coproduction between Taiwan and France based on recent case studies.
After the Signing Ceremony was completed, the spotlight was turned to the upcoming “2017 Taipei Summer Universiade.” Taking place in Taipei, Taiwan from August 19th to 30th, the “2017 Taipei Summer Universiade” will host competitions of 14 compulsory sports and 7 optional sports. It is more than an international sporting event, but the proof of Taipei City’s multi-dimensional commitment to urban revitalization and cultural refinement. CEO Chung, who is also the Commissioner of Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government, sincerely invited everyone to join the Universiade to witness the depth of Taiwanese culture, for the Department has gathered most talented artists to amaze the audience with delicate and profound performances at the event’s opening and closing ceremonies.

Following Commissioner Chung’s remark, actor Easton Dong and actress Megan Lai event ambassadors warmly greeted the press as event ambassadors. The two recalled their training experiences portraying devoted athletes in Island Etude (2006) and 10,000 Miles (2016) respectively, and aspired to take part in more sports-related productions in the future. Easton Dong also seized the occasion to announce his latest film about cycling, We Ride. Afterwards, a special video showcasing recent Taiwanese sports films further proved filmmakers’ talents to tell intriguing stories of athletes through their lens during the past decade.
The press conference was attended by more than a hundred of crucial figures from France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including Audiovisual Officer Aurelien Dirler of French Institute in Taipei, Audiovisual Officer-Culture Souraya Kessaria of Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, Head Mélanie Chebance and Project Manager Ran Zhang of Film France, Director Hu Ching-fang of Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre, officials from Ministry of Culture-Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, Taiwan, renowned Hong kong director Stanley Tong, producer Barbie Tung Wan-si, and Taiwan director Cheng Wei-hao and his crew of Who Killed Cock Robin (2017). International and Taiwanese media, such as Screen International, Hollywood Reporter, Next Media, CTV, Mirror Media, etc. were also attracted to the event.
